Come behind the scenes with us for the latest workshop in our Behind the Scenes at the Bellfoundry series, free to all as part of our National Lottery Heritage Fund project to Save the Last Major Bellfoundry in Britain.
Join us for a Structural Engineer’s view of the trouble that rust causes
in structures from church towers to iron bridges!
This two-hour workshop will take place in the Taylor’s Boardroom, accessible via the office entrance on Freehold Street, beginning at 2pm.
The workshop will be led by Stuart Armitage, a Structural Engineer who has spent twenty years involved in the repair of historic building and structures, including the current repairs to Taylor's Bellfoundry. Stuart has worked on over 300 churches, including his involvement with historic and new bell frames. He has seen the effect of rusting iron in masonry and on the iconic Iron Bridge in Shropshire, so will talk about the immense stresses that it can generate — the power of rust!
The session will cover a number of illustrations of the title topic along with wider matters of conservation structural repairs to many types of buildings, allowing plenty of time for questions and answers. You will also get chance to go behind the scenes at the bellfoundry, exploring some areas that might pose structural engineering challenges in order to see Stuart's work in action.
We kindly remind visitors that they must wear flat, completely closed shoes in order to tour the foundry. It may be necessary for visitors to wear some personal protective equipment on the day, which will be provided by our team.
